Oslo is a new addition to my European city break hit list. It nudged its way in after I spent a fleeting minute at the airport on the way from London to Alesund and the Norwegian fjords. In a world of Instagram glow-ups and Scandi-cool Pinterest boards, it’s an odd reason to be inspired, and perhaps I’m remembering it with rose-tinted glasses, but the terminal was so clean, modern and brimming with genuinely good coffee spots and eateries that I wanted to leave the building and see what the rest of the city had to offer. I know little about Oslo, and I intend to keep it that way until I arrive. Usually, I’m a planner, but this is the kind of city that I want to wander without an agenda, leave my ‘must-visit’ list at home, and simply enjoy being in. One thing I won’t give up, though, is the promise of a good hotel, and Sommerro is somewhere I feel excited to book. Interiors mix 1930s glamour with contemporary style, and there’s a rooftop pool which I’d be tempted to dip into at sunrise, even in winter. —Sarah Bannerman, commerce editor
